A recent Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing highlights the types of projects the Trump Administration seeks to fund through the $1 billion Opioid State Targeted Response Grants (CFDA Number: 93.788) at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (HHS). The grant program is authorized by the 21st Century Cures Act (PL 114-255), which is designed to help accelerate medical product development and bring new innovations and advances to patients who need them faster and more efficiently. The recently passed $1.3 trillion omnibus law (PL 115-141) includes $4 billion for efforts to fight the nation’s opioid epidemic – a priority for the White House. This includes maintaining funds for OSTRG for states and tribal governments to address the opioid epidemic. At least $50 million of the FY 2018 funding will go to tribes. Additionally, 21% of the remaining amount will go to states with the highest mortality rate related to opioid use disorders. The grants may be used for a number of activities including education, treatment, behavioral health services for individuals in treatment programs, referral to treatment services, recovery support and medical screening associated with such treatment.
